The mission of the Truth School is to empower students with the skills needed to transform the world.
Students at the Truth School will graduate ready for success in college, career, and life. They will serve as active agents in the construction of peace. They will know who they are, what they want, and where they are going. They can walk into any space, find their place, and make a powerful contribution.
The Truth School achieves this vision through a Montessori education that fosters student-led classrooms through appropriate environmental structure, enables students to engage in meaningful work with real world applications, and offers a close-knit community where students pursue justice and practice stewardship.
"My vision of the future is no longer of people taking exams, earning a secondary diploma, and proceeding on to university, but of individuals passing from one stage of independence to a higher, by means of their own activity, through their own effort of will, which constitutes the inner evolution of the individual."
"Adolescents need the right balance of challenge and support, and of choice and structure, but individual freedom is key. Choice produces a deeper and more sustained engagement, and independent work based on interest is crucial. They need to work hard and be stretched as well as have time for reflection and laughter."
The Sojourner Truth School will open by Fall of 2020 as Washington, DC’s first public Montessori middle and high school. Our team is working hard to create an innovative and exciting learning space that embodies our four design principles: (1) Honor self development, (2) Pursue justice everywhere, (3) Design for positive impact, and (4) Challenge the mind, body, and soul.
