The Truth School builds on the Montessori commitment to deep, personalized learning through carefully designed classroom environments and freedom within limits. We expand this time-tested model into secondary education by combining an emphasis on personalized learning with an understanding of the skills and tools that a diverse population of 12- to -18-year-olds need to be successful students, leaders, and citizens. Specifically, we meet adolescents’ developmental need for authentic social interaction and meaningful work with real applications.
All aspects of the Truth School - from instructional model, to physical environment, to school culture - are anchored by the following design principles: honor self development; pursue justice everywhere; design for positive impact; and challenge the mind, body and soul. These design principles, grounded in the Montessori educational philosophy, form a coherent vision of the Truth School.
The Sojourner Truth Public Charter School is Washington, DC’s first public Montessori middle and high school. Truth is accessible via open enrollment for 6th through 12th graders at www.MySchoolDC.org. We strive to be an innovative and exciting learning space that embodies our two design principles: (1) Students need to be prepared for life and not just school, and (2) Every student’s identity, voice, perspective, and choice matter.
